You Grow Girl Super Bundle Giveaway

yougrowgirl_15yearsprizes

Over the 15 years that I have been publishing YouGrowGirl.com, Davin and I have collaborated on a range of garden-related projects and products, including books (I designed the 1st; he designed the last 3), t-shirts, buttons, embroidery patterns, and more. So for the forth giveaway I thought I’d reach right back to the very beginning and assemble a super bundle that represents some of these collaborations. I even dug around in my office closet and unearthed eight of the many garden-related buttons we made over the years, including our very first: the Garden Hoe and my personal perennial favourite, I Heart Dirt.

Thanks again for continuing to write in, read the site, and indulge me in this month’s trip down memory lane. Keep growing!

  1. My birthday is March 17th and I would love this! I am a “plant geek” and I adore dirt and rocks and worms and salamanders and froggies too!

  2. I’m definitely a ‘plant geek’ .. not perfect .. but always learning! :) <3

  3. I am love the “Born Curious” t-shirt (It was a toss-up between “plant lover and this). I am definitely a “plant geek” .

    Thank you.

  4. It’s a toss up between Plant Geek and Microfarmer. But mostly I’m a plant geek that is a wannabe microfarmer.

  5. “garden hoe”
I swear I will spend a paycheck a month on anything to do with my gardens.
Books to soil to interesting containers and plants: I want it all!!!!

  6. What a giveaway – wow!!
I think I am all 3 of them, but since relocating out here in PEI, I think I can now really qualify as a microfarmer. :-)

  7. Oh I LOVE these! Definitely a microfarmer, I have a typical city lot but every year our garden takes up more and more space as we try to grow as much of our own food as possible. :-D

  8. I guess I am a plant geek! I’m a geeky everything else, might as well be a plant geek, too!

  9. Plant Geek!! It wasn’t until last summer that I learned the difference between an annual and a perennial. My husband & I are no longer able to have pets because of allergies/asthma (we had litter-trained rabbits). I need something to nurture, so I have developed a passion for plants. Also, I have a number of health conditions, including multiple chemical sensitivities (allergic to perfumes, etc.). It is very socially isolating. Indoor and outdoor plants give me something beautiful to look at, as I must spend most of my time at home.

  10. A garden hoe? Haha! That is simply hilarious. I’ve always wanted to be a farmer so I’ll g with micro-farmer although garden hoe sounds much more spicy! And, what a wonderful giveaway! Love your blog.

  11. P L A N T G E E K and proud of it.

Thanks for this generous offering, Gayla!

  12. I’ll have to go with “garden hoe”. A friend and I once planned to name our future urban farm “Sure Thing Farm: We Hoe All Day”.

  13. I have had the garden hoe shirt for over 10 years so I will stick with that one ;-) But I do love dirt…

  14. Definitely a microfarmer, although it tends to be a drop it in the ground and see what happens variety

  15. I currently have your button, “The revolution will be cultivated” on my winter coat…that’s me! All your buttons describe me, to be honest! :)

  16. I am definitely a Garden Hoe, I do work in a nursery after all. We have been joking for a while that we are ‘Garden Hose’ the plural version. We had even talked about a t-shirt idea with the word Garden and a picture of a watering hose. Your t-shirts are really cute!

  17. I aspire to be a microfarmer, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet. I’m definitely a plant geek, and quite proud to wear that banner!

  18. I don’t have the room these days to get out the garden hoe, and I’d be a very micro microfarmer, with our best balcony harvest being seed grown basil. I suppose I aspire to plant geekdom, with hopes and dreams of counting my houseplants once more in the hundreds, and bringing home new garden plants everytime I leave the house. It runs in the family, my grandmother used to slip cuttings in her purse whenever she saw something she liked. Thanks!

  19. At the risk of sounding immodest, I’d have to say all three.

I’m a Plant Geek – I volunteer as a Master Gardener in my county.

I’m a Garden Ho – I’ll fiddle with plants & weeds in any garden I’m standing in, and I never shut up about my own.

I’m a Microfarmer – We have vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers, and mushrooms growing in our garden.

  20. I heart dirt! We mostly get messy and hope we get some of the bounty before the local wildlife devour it all. Count me in!

  21. Micro-farmer all the way!

on an coincidental note I am wearing my micro farmer t shirt right now….. kinda weird

  22. Garden Hoe! I love being out in my (and everyone else’s) garden. If I’m not out tending the garden, I’m researching, discussing and planning. Gardening is a most calming and rewarding calling.

  23. Micro-farmer! My garden is small but I share my passion of growing with a community of early childhood teachers as I work with them in their sites or in trainings! Children need gardens! :)

  24. Mine is definitely “What’cha Growin?” haha! I’m always asking people that! Thanks for the chance!

  25. Probably Plant Geek. I manage the trial garden at Michigan State University, so I get to grow hundreds of varieties of plants each year before they are even available to the public!

  26. SOIL Power! All! The! Way! I also live on the North Shore of BC, and my husband’s community of mountain bikers have a similar T with a graphic of all the trails.
    “Pipeline&
    OilCan&…” Etc.

I “squeeeeed” pretty hard when I saw your rendition.

  27. I consider myself a Microfarmer. Love that term. Before I moved to my present home I dug up my front yard to get a sunnier veggie garden.

  28. Let’s see, top three, “I Heart Dirt” “microfarmer” and “Plant Geek” are all things I’ve used to describe myself! I love your books and would love winning this package! Keep doing all the great things you do!

  29. All three, but plant geek foremost, and discovering your website years ago was a life changer! While lost in it one day, I uttered the line my husband is still making fun of me for: “I love plants — so much!”

  30. We’re moving to a larger apartment, and my boyfriend asks, “What are we going to do with 150 square feet more space?” My eyes light up and we answer at the same time: “More plants!” – although my response was pure enthusiasm and his was more of a *sigh “as long as it makes you happy.” I have to admit I’m all three. Plant Geek because I immediately Google every plant I acquire and started a library of plant books and seeds. Micro Farmer because I often squirrel away veggie and fruit seeds for sprouting (i.e. how I ended up with a surprise avocado tree in my tomato container). Garden Hoe because I’ve taken plants from a dumpster… on more than one occasion. Well, I had fun thinking of a response. Thanks for the chance to win some fantastic YGG stuff!

  31. I’ll be a microfarmer this year. Not sure if I’ll be getting a community plot, but I have tons of see. I’ll be packing our long balcony with herbs, vegetables and pollinator friendly blooms.

  32. Microfarmer! I started calling my gardens a farm once I got 3 community garden patches…

  33. Microfarmer fits me best. Plant geek to some extent, but I want my garden to be edible.

  34. Tug of war between Garden hoe and plant geek! Can I be both?

Congratulations and Count me in for this super generous awesome bundle giveaway please.

  35. Count me in. May I be all three? It depends on the day of the week and the weather here in Colorado

  36. I am definitely a microfarmer! Small spaces is all I have available, so I’ve learned to grow everything in the least amount of space I can get away with, and I’ve gotten some beautiful results.

  37. Definitely “plant geek” – tiny garden but huge stack of research every year before I plant a single seed.

  38. Well I’d consider myself a plant geek, but some may call me a garden hoe! And I would answer to either. Believe me, I’ve been called worse.

  39. Microfarmer suits…I am trying to see how much food can be produced in our tiny garden plots in the city. Enjoy both your gardening and literary skills…

  40. 2015 will be the start of my adventure in full blown gardening (so glad I found your website!) so I’m not sure what best describes me yet :-) Count me in anyways!

  41. I never thought it’d happen, but I’m becoming a plant geek! veggies, succulents, herbs, flowers – love’em!

  42. I have been proudly wearing the “I heart dirt” pin for a while now, but “gardening for the people” suits me best I think :)

  43. I’m a garden hoe! :D Thank you for hosting this giveaway.

I’m going to go read a gardening book or two now…

  44. Im a garden hoe because Im always out side bare foot with my feet in the dirt like a dirty hoe. ;)

  45. Microfarmer in my own mind for sure! You Grow Girl was one of the first gardening books I read. It was inspiring.

  46. Thanks for a treasure trove of information! I hope I win, as these would be a fabulous addition to our local Food Not Lawns chapter’s library! Hope you feel better soon. to borrow a friend’s tag line: Peas, lovage and soilidarity!

  47. Oh well, count me in. In the unlikely event, I’ll share with some very appreciative people. (Fake plant geek girl?)

  48. I am a plant geek! Love the buttons. I am a mosaic artist and would love to incorporate the buttons in a future project. Happy planting!!

  49. Micro Farmer, I suppose. Bees, chickens, gardens and, hopefully in the future, meat rabbits. 1 block from downtown!

  50. I’ve gotta go with “plant geek,” because I’m always finding new types to drool over, and get excited when I learn new things about them. :)

I also totally would have entered this just for the herb book. :)

  51. Absolutely a plant geek! I love learning about all the little finicky details of each plant variety and what it likes. Leaf shapes, cotyledon appearance and seed formation are all favorites too!

  52. I aspire to be a microfarmer- even lobbying the village for backyard chickens! Spring will come eventually to those of us in Central New York….then, we plant!!!

  53. Just started gardening last year. Still trying to get it figured out. So, I guess I’m a Microfarmer. Count me in!

  54. As a community garden coordinator, I would have to say Garden Hoe, wannabe Micro Farmer. Thanks for the great contest

  55. Plant Geek… I studied botany and soil science in school but really fell hard for gardening when I finally got my own little piece of land (about the size of your garden). Love your writing!

  56. Microfarmer best describes me.

In what seems like another life now, I was the owner operator of a 48 acre organic farm…12 acres in vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

I’ve now returned to my roots from 30 years ago, hand crafting double dug raised beds, supplemented with containers, in southern Oregon. Other than rocky soil, it’s a gardeners’ paradise.

Thanks for all the content on your website. And mad props for the generous give away… count me in :)

  57. I’m a plant geek who loves dirt! And possibly on my way to being a microfarmer–I brought my pepper plants in for the winter and–surprise!–found 3 tomato seeds sprouting around them. Two are still doing well, so now I just have to figure out how to keep them happy indoors until it’s finally time to plant outside. Given that my garden is still under a few feet of snow, I think it’s going to be awhile…

  58. i’m not sure yet what i am. probably garden hoe. i have enough land, but the soil is terrible. i have completely changed my way of eating due to health issues, and really need to start growing some of my own veggies. so please count me in.

  59. I’m a Plant Geek! My nose is always in the books trying to figure out how to care for whatever my ailing plant is and I’m not afraid to grow something new!

And I’m always stopping by my local plant nursery- they have seen my husband and I go from “just friends” to marriage and now having a baby! It’s pretty cool to get to know them through these years!

  60. I’m going to go with microfarmer. My goal every growing season is to increase how much of our food comes from the garden and decrease our grocery budget.

  61. I’ll have to go with “What’cha Growin’?”

I garden in a harsh climate at significant elevation, and I always want to know what my friends in more pleasant climes are growing while I am getting my usual bumper crop of lettuce and questionable harvests of everything else.

  62. Pure plant geek! :) No matter where I go, my green thumbs follow and I am always dreaming of Spring soil and seeds from the moment the first snow flies.

  63. microfarmer all the way! I love growing my own food.

This is a bit off topic, but there is a donation-based restaurant place near me that grows its own food (ant they try to do it organically).. the concept is “pay what you can afford” with a minimum suggested $ amount. If someone can’t pay financially, they can still eat but they will pay in time: either helping out in the kitchen or working in the garden.

  64. Garden Hoe! I have two of your books (awesome!), and I truly appreciate the invaluable FREE information on your website, too. Thank you and happy anniversary!

  65. You can call me a microfarmer, since I just downsized! Although I may upsize by joining a local P-Patch. :-)

    Count me in!!

  66. Hi Gayla, I have been learning from you for years! I especially love your tips in You Grow Girl… like the wine bottle path and the apron that I still wear and love :)

I would have to say that plant geek is my favorite slogan of those that you gave, but I have the t-shirt for “plant lover”!

  67. I’m a plant geek through and through. I even have the shirt (from my college horticulture club) to prove it!

  68. I am definitely a garden hoe — vegetable, flower, you name it. As a matter of fact I have just come inside to take a break after pruning my crape myrtles, giving my monkey grass a hair cut and taking care of some much needed leaf raking. Today’s 70 degree weather in Tennessee is like being in paradise. Hope I win!

P.S. I even raked out a small snake — yikes! He was tired of winter too.

  69. What a generous give away! I would say that I’m part plant geek and part garden ho…..I mean hoe.

  70. I used to consider myself just a “plant geek” but since we bought our house last summer I am officially a “Garden Hoe”! Tha know you for all of your wonderful inspiration!

  71. All three, but in progression:

I started out as a plant geek, but then using a garden hoe connected me so closely to nature’s beauty, it soon didn’t matter what I was tending or whether I was even in my own garden. And about 8 or so years ago, environmental concerns led me to try to be a mini-microfarmer on my balcony :-).

At about the same time as I started growing edible plants, I discovered your site and began following you. I even have the Garden Hoe and “revolutionary” buttons, which I believe I may have won in a previous contest. I’ve always considered them collector’s items :-).

Thank you for taking me down memory lane, too. This spring I will have neither a balcony garden nor even a balcony due to major repair/restoration work on our building. (We’re also losing at least half of our garden/landscaping that has been maturing over the past 25 years. Truly heartbreaking.) However, I’ve moved on and today I’m sowing seeds (tomatoes and eggplant) as I think of other ways and places to garden.

    Happy Anniversary, Gayla. I have pretty much everything in the bundle so I should probably exclude myself from the contest. THANK YOU for the past 15 years. (Actually, the best prize would be to someday meet you :-).}

    • That was a clever heart. And then it wasn’t.
I’m better at dirt than computers…

      I heart dirt! Really!

  72. I left the city for the country and I’m enjoying being a ‘Micro farmer”. Can’t wait to get my hands dirty.

  73. Since I’m also a long distance hiker and mom to a 14 mo old, I’m thinking “I <3 dirt" best sums me up. ;)

  74. Definitely Plant geek: I just finished my excel spreadsheet with planting dates in cold frames, direct sow, transplant, fall harvest…

  75. Count me in. Do I really have to choose? I’m no more capable to choosing than I am of limiting seed orders in the spring!

  76. Congratulations on 15 years!!! Time certainly goes by fast!
I’m a total garden hoe and a plant geek! Big hugs to you and Davin… what an amazing ride! Here’s to another 15 years (at least!!)

  77. Plant geek–definitely! I have collections of epimedium, hosta,Siberian iris, and numerous shrubs, perennials, and trees besides. Can’t wait to get even more!

  78. I am a micro gardener and plant geek! Micro gardener out there by day, plant geek poring over my catalogs and books by night!

  79. I think I am all of them. I drive everyone crazy talking about plants, seeds and gardening all the time. Can’t wait for Spring to get here.

  80. I’m a microfarmer. I have an allottment garden and basically “live off the land” from spring until fall.

  81. I am a plant geek transitioning into a microfarmer. I always end up with more plants than I intended.

  82. Love my Garden Love me
Australia I still will buy your books I love what you have done to your garden over the years….

  83. Garden Hoe. Since, I just came into work on Monday and when asked what I did over the weekend, I said Hoe-ing. Everyone got a good laugh!

  84. Count me in, thanks. I’m a garden hoe and plant lover!
I also had an Amaryllis gift to brighten my winter, so awesome.

  85. Plant Geek for sure! And I also love dirt. My sister and I were just talking about how sexy a nice pile of rich compost is. : )

  86. Count me in! I dream of the day when I can claim micro-farmer. Like you, I feel like I never have enough space and I’m always sqeezing in one more plant!

Thank you for publishing such a great website! I look forward to reading your updates.
