Do you love tomatoes, want to grow tomatoes, or want some advice on new varieties to try? My guest this week is tomato crazy gardener, Kelly Gilliam. Kelly was a regular of the now defunct You Grow Girl forums way back in the day. Back then she was gardening in zone 8b out on the west coast, but has recently moved to zone 3 in Edmonton, Alberta where the growing conditions are very different. One of her strategies for this shorter growing season has been to focus on varieties that mature and produce in about 80 days or less.
If you’re into tomatoes and tomato-relatives or are interested in starting your own seed bank, I think you’ll like this episode.

About My Guest
Kelly Gilliam is an avid edible gardener who has called several climate zones her home over the past 10 years. Originally from Edmonton, she moved to the west coast, caught the gardening bug there, then carried that with her to the Kootenays, Vancouver Island, and then back home to Edmonton where she’s learning to readjust to a shorter season, but much more sun. Kelly sits on the board of directors for Seeds of Diversity Canada, and also runs her own seed bank whose purpose is to grow out and distribute as many seeds to as many gardeners as she can.

- Rugose leaves – Rugose leaves have a puckered, wrinkled, or pleated surface that remind me of a twisty roller coaster ride. Dwarf tomato varieties (small varieties that usually grow no more than 3-4 feet tall) tend to have this type of leaf.
I just finished listening to this! I’ve “known” Kelly a few years online and it’s great to hear her voice. This was like a master class on tomatoes and I hope a ton of people come by and learn about all these awesome and weird tomatoes!
Absolutely loved this episode…could have gone for another hour! Tomatoes are a topic I love too. I’ve grown a few that y’all mentioned and there were plenty more I haven’t grown.
A great purple tomato to try sometime is Amazon chocolate. They get very large and are one of my husband’s favorite tomatoes. Personally I’m a fan of Arkansas Traveler as it does well in our heat.
Just ate my first ripe tomato for lunch…can’t wait for more.
We did go for another hour and a half after I stopped recording!
Great interview! I am sad that it is too late to start more tomato seeds. I will be saving this for the winter seed shopping. In zone 6 I don’t feel the season-length crutch, but I love the weirdies. I am still new to the wide world of tomatoes, with last summer being my first experience with heirlooms, but I can’t get enough.
Enjoyed the education on all the different varities of tomatoes you both grow and love. I also looked at the information on tips for improving the growing season of tomatoes. I plan to use your pruning tips and water and milk mix to prevent late summer tomato diseases.
Gayla,
Do you have a picture on your website of your bamboo tomato supports? I would love to see it. Always trying to find better ways to support my large indeterminate plants.
