This podcast was a longtime in the making. I’m a visually-oriented person; sound is not my forte. It took quite some doing (and a lot of help and encouragement from Davin), but after a seemingly endless stream of hurdles I am pleased to finally launch my new podcast, What’cha Growing?.
Since this is the inaugural episode of the show, I thought I’d provide a little back story. Way back when this site was new (around 2000), there was an audience participation column called What’cha Growin?. When I started considering taking the plunge into podcasting, I envisioned casual conversations with gardeners from all walks of life. I imagined talking to experts, growers, people who work in the industry and have all sorts of knowledge as well as my friends, neighbours, and even strangers for whom gardening is a personal passion rather than a profession. I want to talk to everybody! I tend to begin each conversation with my gardening friends with a question about what’s new in their gardens, so it made sense to revive the title here.
I hope you enjoy this first episode, and now that I’ve got the first one under my belt, I look forward to making more.

About My Guest
Margaret Roach (of A Way to Garden) has been gardening and writing about it for over 25 years from her home in New York’s Hudson Valley. What I love about her work (and her too) is how much it is informed and driven by curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She’s always trying something new or has some new nugget of fascinating information to share, making her the perfect guest for this inaugural episode. Follow Margaret’s rural garden exploits at her site A Way to Garden.
How nice to hear your voice, Gayla, to pair with your face and your intellect.
Lovely discussion! Thanks for this new offering.
Thanks! I hope they will prove to be more interesting as the season progresses and my skill with the technology improves.
Congratulations! I’ll be downloading the first episode tomorrow morning when I have unlimited bandwidth between 2 AM – 7AM. It’s a downside of living in a rural area in Canada -slow limited bandwidth.
Yes! I’ve been waiting patiently for more gardening podcasts. I get through the few there are and then have to wade through the boring, local gardening call in shows answering the same questions about how to take care of a lawn over and over and over again.
Chances are very, very high that I will never had an episode on lawn care. :)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Woops! I hit post instead of line down.
I’m a professional gardener& listen to lectures, books and podcasts while I work in client’s gardens (& my own!) The list of audio horticulture is shockingly thin. You’ve given me ear candy.
Smiles & Happy Digging!
I always listen to Margaret Roach’s weekly podcast and now I get to listen to yours with her as a guest. Win Win! Always enjoy the garden info and thoughts on gardening. I will look forward to your future podcasts. Thanks
I so enjoyed listening to your conversation and as always learn something new! I look forward to more!
I loved listening to your podcast. I wish I had a gardening friend to talk with about seeds, compost, etc. Most people just kinda nod their heads and half listen. I love both of your websites and feel like you are my neighbors. Looking forward to future podcasts Gayla!!
Thanks Gayla – that was fun! Looking forward to the next one. And thank you for introducing me to Margaret’s site, there is a lot of good information out there. Also I love your books. They are my go-to for growing food.
Gayla – yay – I just saw this. I’ll be downloading tomorrow when I have access to limitless wifi

Hi Gayla – I finally got my act together and subscribed to your podcast. Really enjoyed your discussion with Margaret Roach. I was interested in what Margaret said about the vigour of plants grown from older seeds, that the seed may still be viable but the plants may not be vigorous. Perhaps the plants from the older seeds won’t be very vigorous, but the seeds those plants produce will be?? Anyway, I look forward to listening to the next podcast. I have some catching up to do! Hope you’re enjoying your garden. ~ Louise.
