My guest this week is Renee Garner, an artist who draws inspiration from her garden in North Carolina. She is also a mom to two young children and in this episode we chat about how she engages the kids with the garden – what works and what doesn’t work. We also discuss her own personal connection with the garden: how that informs her artwork and how her art, in turn, allows her to see and experience the garden from a different perspective. Renee is also a chicken keeper, which leads to a discussion about how she manages a flock through pregnancy and while raising small kids.
Please Note: Renee’s baby began to cry towards the end so you may notice a few stark jumps where I made cuts.
I will be taking a break from the podcast for the month of August and will return with episode 10 in September.
Episode #09: Renee Garner | Gardening with Kids / Art Inspired by the Garden / Chickens / Growing Figs

2. Use my Amazon affiliate link when you buy something on Amazon. As a writer of books I have my own issues with Amazon; however, a lot of us use it and it does have its perks. When you click on this link before purchasing an item — any item at all — a small percentage of the purchase price goes toward supporting this site, including the podcast. What’s great about it is that it’s something you would have bought regardless so it doesn’t cost you anything extra or guilt you into buying something you don’t need, want, or can’t afford. From my perspective it is much better than running a surplus of ads, sponsored posts, or even worse, running ads that are in opposition to the values around sustainability and affordability that I promote here.

About My Guest
Renee Garner digs, draws, and plays with her family and critters in Matthews, NC, USA.
Great listen! I first came across Renee on the YGG forums years ago when she gave some seeds away. Been reading ever since and even have some of her art, too!
Since I’m about to have my own kid I’m definitely glad to hear how others incorporate their kids into their gardening.
I love her relaxed approach to bringing kids into it. That it doesn’t have to be staged and organized.
It was great listening to the podcast. Years ago I followed Renee on YGG. Love the way that she gets the kids involved in gardening. At a very early age my siblings were given the responsibility of taking care of chickens and turkeys. This has defined who I am today.
