I want to thank all of you who have backed the Kickstarter campaign for my book, Grow Curious: Creative Activities to Cultivate Joy, Wonder, and Discovery in You and Your Garden. I have been working to thank each one of you personally, but if you haven’t heard from me yet, please know that I am grateful for your support as well as your belief and trust in me and this project. Whether this ends successfully or not, I have been buoyed and humbled by your spirit and enthusiasm.
At the time of writing this, we’re at just under 50% We’re now past 50% funded with eight seven days remaining before the campaign ends. All of the research I’ve read says that the bulk of funding comes in the first and last weeks so this isn’t over yet. What I need now more than ever is to get this project seen by as many eyes as possible. Every little bit counts. I am equally grateful to each of you who has told your friends and neighbours, shared it online, shared it with your community garden groups and horticultural societies, or emailed me personally with words of support. It is not hyperbole to say that I can not do this without you!
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowd-funding platform. We only get a dime if we reach 100% of our goal. People have asked me why I didn’t use a different platform such as Indiegogo that allows you to pocket all dollars that are raised and the answer is that I’m not trying to raise any amount that I can, the budget assigned to this IS the minimal, real-world cost to produce the book. Realistically, I could have gone for a more cost-cutting production method by printing overseas or using less environmentally responsible practices, but in keeping with my values and those espoused within the book, I chose to go with a small press right here in Toronto and that costs the bucks.
They also say that doing a Kickstarter campaign is a marathon of sorts, but so is making a book and I’ve already made four, so I was prepared and ready to run this race all the way to the finish line, no matter what. But it is also an incredible emotional rollercoaster and now that we’re in the last week everything is amped up and then some. I’m bracing myself for the valleys and peaks that will come in the next few says. Thanks again for coming along on this crazy ride!
I also wanted to mention that I have updated the FAQ with a new question and answer (scroll to the bottom of the Kickstarter page). It’s a big one about the content of the book since I don’t show that in the promotional material. If you have any questions about what this book will contain, I hope my answer makes it clearer.
Lastly, if you have any questions, please feel free to message and ask. It really helps me with the FAQ, since if you have a question, chances are good that others will too.
Thanks again and I’ll see you at the finish line…
