Just as I was once again pulled under by winter’s worst, the ‘Chico’ amaryllis that I received as a Holiday gift delivered its bright and cheerful promise, proving once again that anything that blooms in the drab winter months is worth having around.
The best amaryllis flowers have a painterly quality about them, as if they’ve been sculpted with some new-fangled, high-tech material, their colour and texture carefully applied with tiny brushes. I like this one a lot. It was everything I had hoped it would be: wispy, elegant, and dramatic, with lots of interesting details to capture my eye.
Here’s hoping that I can get it to bloom again in a future winter. With any luck, it will appear as this one did, just in the nick of time.
The 2 foot Amaryllis Stem
Because I believe in revealing my gardening mishaps, here’s what happens to an amaryllis stem when there’s absolutely no room left on windowsills or underneath artificial lights and it grows leggy in a desperate attempt to reach sun. Poor thing!
How exotic!
It certainly does have a lot to catch the eye.
Beautiful.
those curves! nice amaryllis, nice photog’s. very cool. amazing colour too.
My Xmas 2013 amaryllis are in full re-bloom right now – perfect timing. Mine aren’t as jazzy as yours, just the standard ones, but a nice stripey red & white variety. I agree, anything blooming this time of year is a gift.
cheers,
jake
Very nice! I love the contrast between the background wall and the beautiful amaryllis. Although the flower may be a little withered, it is still a sight for sore eyes. ^_^
It’s not withered — it had just opened. This one has a thin, curly, wispy look.
Thanks for sharing your “gardening mishaps”! Make me feel so human for my garden errs. What else have you found blooms well in the winter?
