Read an Excerpt from My New Book, Grow Curious

The Grow Curious book is here! To celebrate, we’ve decided to make the Introduction available for everyone to read. This will give you a small taste of the book, as well as two projects that you can start with as you wait for your copy to arrive. Click here to read an excerpt on your computer or mobile device

Our goal was to produce a beautiful, well-made, and locally produced, offset printed book. It has turned out as beautifully as we had hoped and I can’t wait to get these out to everyone who backed the project! If you missed the Kickstarter there are copies available. However, this is an extremely limited printing and 60% of the books are already sold — don’t hesitate to reserve yours! We begin shipping this week.

About the Excerpt

I believe that gardening should not be costly, and in planning the activities for this book I made it a point to stick with projects that do not require inaccessible gear or gadgets. However, one thing you will need is a blank journal. But here again, I did not want you to feel obligated to go out and buy one, so I have provided a simple bookbinding project so you can make your own using recycled paper and other items that you already have on hand.

For practical reasons, I’ve divided the book up seasonally; however, many projects will work over multiple seasons and I encourage readers to dive in wherever you like and choose your own adventure. However, in the book I do ask that no matter what direction you decide to take, that you begin with the second activity provided with this excerpt entitled, Begin Here, as it is meant as a baseline that you can come back to again and again.

  1. Gayla and Davin, the book looks beautiful! Can’t wait to receive my copy. Your gardening and design teamwork has been an inspiration to me for years now. Congratulations on this new project.

  2. I remember reading You Grow Girl 18 years ago. It was my first gardening book and I loved it. I had just purchased my first house with my very own backyard. It was tiny and shady – but it was MINE. I was anxious to get out there and grow stuff but had no idea what to do. After reading your book, I planted lettuce and herbs and made cloches and used broken eggshells so the squirrels and slugs wouldn’t bother my goodies. When I harvested my first batch of lettuce – – my then husband took a picture of my gigantic, proud smile. Now I’m in my 3rd house – and container “salsa” gardening is my go-to spring/summer activity. Nothing compares to the joy of harvesting food that you’ve grown all by yourself. I still have You Grow Girl. In the age of Kindle, I got rid of most of my books but I kept that one. I’ll be buying this new one too. I’m hooked! Thanks so much, Gayla!

  3. Does the online club have an expiration or is it a “lifetime” membership? I was a part of the Grow Write Guild and I assume it’s sort of like an update of that? Thanks, I can’t wait for the new book!

  4. Can I find it in Amazon? I would love to buy it.

And I remember I saw in your blog about how to make a light system, where can I find it?

  5. I just start gardening in my house and got the link for this book. “Grow Curious”. I will probably go for the eBook Edition as I am from Asia.

    Thanks!

  6. Hi there. We just found the blog and are very excited to read more. Thank you for publishing all this great information. We wanted to comment on the Parasitized Ladybug blog, but comments were closed. Are we able to ask questions through here, or message privately? Thank you for your time.
