I took this photo last week at Dufferin Grove Park where little spears of asparagus were starting to pop up in one of the garden beds. A day later I was treated to an AMAZING microgreens salad that included asparagus, prepared by the chef at Terrain and left for me at my hotel. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated such a delicious and nourishing meal after a day spent in airports. And to top it off, it was my first taste of fresh asparagus stalks of the season!
I look forward to lots more as it becomes available here in Toronto.
oooh, i LOVE the first asparagus of the season. it usually doesn’t make it in the house. i love to pick it and eat it fresh!
Lovely picture. We just planted three asparagus plants in one of our raised beds. I can’t wait until it starts to produce for us. It’s so versatile in the kitchen, an appetizer, a side dish, or a yummy snack.
I always want to gather wild asparagus but never know when to tart looking. I am in northern Wisconsin, in Door County. Does anyone know when I can expect to start finding wild asparagus?
By the way I’m pretty sure that it is not advised to pick asparagus from a new plant for the first three years. That’s why I haven’t planted any. I haven’t got the patience to wait that long.
Billy Joel: I’d say you can start looking now. If your pasque flowers are blooming then you are probably in a similar climate to me.
Yes, you’re supposed to wait a few years before harvesting.
I am so insanely jealous! I have yet to add asparagus to my garden, but maybe this year I’ll make it!
