This dark fellow was drawn last week using the back of another scrap of brittle old wallpaper. Sometimes when I sit down I put all my attention into one drawing and other nights a few come out rapidly in succession. This was drawn in about a minute after finishing the larger patterned wallpaper bird. I like both for different reasons.
Sometimes the quicker, rougher drawings are most exciting when I see them blown-up as scanned images. The textures and chunks of colour form their own accidental canvasses. I thought I would share a couple of close cropped images from this bird.
I love how the colours layer on top of each other. This close, they feel huge and tactile. Areas that look like soft washes bristle with texture from the paper and the waxy pigments.
It always pays to take a closer look.

One of my favorite things is getting to the gritty scale where you can see an artist’s process, and the layers of color that build up to the full effect. Thanks for posting the macros! The blues are amazing.
Beautiful!
Though not much of an artist myself, but I can say with certainty that your black bird is awesome. It is looking so natural that I feel, if I blow some air into it, it will quickly flutter its wings and soar in the sky.
Great work of art!
i like your blog, but won’t be coming here again due to the instrusive ‘landscape architects’ pop up that appears on every page.
That’s weird – I don’t get that. I’ve never had a pop-up ad from this blog. Are you sure it isn’t something on your computer?
Firefox is a great browser, by the way – you can control pop-ups with it even on sites that do use pop-up ads. You might want to check into it.
I have not seen these either and be assured… if I did they’d be out immediately. I would never accept anything like that.
I double checked to be sure and there isn’t anything like that listed. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
