Monster Vegetables

zucchini_hands.jpg

I made a quick trip to my community garden plot yesterday where several large zucchinis and cucumbers were quickly expanding into over-sized monster vegetables. I had been gone for 6 days and Davin was unable to get into the garden with a poorly copied key. There are more cucumbers on the way and little scalloped patty pan zucchinis are forming. It’s gonna be a good harvest year.

A prize winner has been chosen in the last contest. Kelly of Texas has won a copy of “Let’s Get Primitive: The Urban Girl’s Guide to Camping – by Heather Menicucci. Thanks to everyone who entered the contest. There will be another soon.

  1. Those still look great, though!

I came home to a bunch of monster veggies, too. At some point though they get too big and bitter… that’s when the zucchini is shredded for bread!

    (PS Happy belated Birthday!)

  2. I sort of love that “I’ve been away from my garden, and it blew up” feeling! I’m often guilty of trying to watch the pot boil, so sometimes it is more rewarding to be away for a few days and then see what has happened.

  3. Those look fantastic! I stumbled upon this website a week ago, bought the You Grow Girl book, and have started my own little patio garden. Before I read the book, I assumed my patio was too hot, and my little piece of concrete jungle was no place for a garden. But, I’m excited to share that I’ve since planted god knows how many veggies and herbs, and am even seeing little sprouts already, even in the thick of summer. I’m all for some guerilla gardening, as there are lots of little uncared for plots of dirt where I live that could use some greening up. Thanks Gayla, your book rocks.
