This unknown red variety bloomed a few weeks ago. I bought it at a garden shop in early spring, but it did not come with an accurate tag. I almost didn’t buy it as I was saving space for ‘Black Barlow’ a variety I had been coveting for ages. But wouldn’t you know it, I finally came upon the variety in bloom a few weeks ago and it was too purple for my taste. The photos lied!
A gift from my friend Barry, these white flowers have little green spots on some of the tips that make it just a little bit extra special.
In addition to transplants (there are more that haven’t yet bloomed), I also grew a few aquilegia varieties from seed. They are tiny little things right now and it will be another year before they bloom.
How is it that spring isn’t technically through, and I am already anticipating next year?
I love Columbines with their drooping blooms. The red is very pretty!
These look so beautiful! Where in the yard are they? I wish you had a section where we could click and see the progress of the yard by week :-) I know there must be tons of stuff blooming by now!
Wow, these are wonderful! I can totally relate! The more I get into gardening and landscaping the more I look into next month and next year!
I do the same thing: start planning for next year now. I think it’s a sign of faith in gardening. And also, there are things I’m not going to spend time on now, but I know I want it different next year.
It’s the potential you see in this year’s plants that makes you anticipate next year…
I found a small columbine plant out back with white blooms rimmed in purple. The rest of them are usually purple, sometimes pink. I hesitate to invest in others as I’m sure they would be cross-pollinated & return to wild colours in a few years.
I’ll just admire your’s!!
That deep red is just gorgeous. Are aquilegia your new favourite flower? Or just a current obsession? :)
I am so freeking jealous! I just discovered columbines this winter and looked high and low for seeds. I started seeds indoors and not much worth mentioning happened. Must try to direct sow some…
Amy: Not even an obsession. A perennial favourite. Moving into a new space meant the opportunity to expand my collection a little.
Jennifer: They’re in front of the shed. Through the winter that was a very bright spot and I assumed full sun. But since the leaves have developed on the neighbour’s cherry tree, it is proving to be a spot with afternoon shade so I’ve been able to put some partial shade plants there.
I love columbines. They’re so elegant and graceful.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find a wild columbine growing at the place I just moved to. I’ve been wanting one for years, but kept putting off actually buying one.
