…I was in Barbados and it was day 3 into our 35 day trip to the Caribbean. We took the bus from Christ Church to the capital city, Bridgetown.
Meat donut. Your choice of sausage or minced meat. We got the coconut.
Seagrapes (Coccoloba uvifera). They sort-of taste like grapes and grow on trees that live near the sea so…
… and dunks (Ziziphus mauritiana). They taste like mealy crabapples. With salt! I’m really not into them.
Later that day we caught the bus from Bridgetown to Bathsheba to visit Andromeda Botanical Gardens.
Just before the sun went down, I saw a green monkey run across this road. I thought it was a squirrel.
It brings back memories for me seeing the cactus plant with the scratched-in graffiti. My partner and I took a two-week trip to Italy the first 2 weeks this past October with the first five days in Cinque Terre. All of the famous paths between the five villages have abundant succulents covered in graffiti from tourists all over the world. The amazing thing is how old some of them are – There were cactus with “i was here ’89” scratched on them! If you ever get a chance to go, the Cinque Terre is a Unesco Heritage Site and well worth seeing. I loved how everyone grows something. From tiny balcony tomato plants to pomegranate and fig trees in the front yard. I was discouraged at the end of the growing season this year with my tiny shady urban Ottawa garden but when I came back from Italy I was completely rejuvenated and am perusing the seed catalogs for Italian heirlooms with a vengeance now:)
Ah yes, sugar and meat, the international combination. So many happy memories of trying different fruits and wandering in little markets full of piles of interesting stuff. My favorite was the Thai flea market or the Abu Dabi gold market. Wish I had more pictures, but that was before digital. Maybe next time.
