Oh man. I don’t know what to make of the level of paranoia we’ve reached about the recent spinach/ecoli outbreak that has compelled Epic Roots, grower and distributor of mache to go this far in disassociating their product from the maligned leafy vegetable. First the pulp news casts featuring headlines asking, “Is organic food a safer choice?” and now this. All the more reason I suppose, to grow your own.

Crazy crazy crazy! I kept on eating locally grown spinach through that whole thing and was just fine. I FINALLY found some in the store last week and snapped it right up. It’s really getting annoying.
My home-grown spinach didn’t do much this year – can’t seem to get the timing down. Next year!
They’re doing that here, too. As if anyone thinks there’s spinach in their pre-fab Caesar mix. The one good thing about this is that it’s brought attention to the deplorable, unsanitary conditions migrant laborers are subjected to, which endanger us all — even when there’s a port-o-san available [which is certainly not the rule, we hardly ever see one near the many groups of pickers we see when we’re driving through the Salinas farmlands], there’s rarely a wash station. It’s surprising outbreaks like this don’t happen more often.
I know! It’s nuttiness. I understand why the producers are feeling the need to assure the public when it has reached this point, but my goodness! It’s like spinach is now this huge scapegoat or something. Poor maligned leafy green. On the other hand, I’ve found myself looking somewhat sideways at things like my standard sack of 5lbs of organic juicing carrots that hails from CA and arrives in a sealed plastic bag. Might be time to branch out my juicing veggies and just go with local/in season.
