Last night, at a party, artist Prashant Miranda painted my tattoo with watercolours. Please go have a look at his journal pages. Prepare to be blown away.
Since getting the tattoo last year (drawn by Davin Risk), loads of people have asked me if I am going to get it coloured in. I’m still debating getting some light grey shading, and MAYBE having the tomatoes done in red, but my plan was always for a monotone tattoo. The only part that has felt unfinished are the tomatoes because the lines are thinner and there is a lot of open, flat space inside of them.
But it was fun to see it done up colourfully. I really like the out-of-the-lines, messy softness of Prashant’s painting. Oh, and how painless and quick the whole procedure was. This took about 10 minutes while painting with an actual needle… let’s not think about it.
That’s stunning, Gayla! What a great way to “test drive” some color.
I debated having one of my tattoos colored in…ultimately I did and am very happy with the results.
OOooo gorgeous.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oh my god – that’s a great idea.
greetings,
So fun!! I like it with colour and without, it’s a beautiful piece of art either way.
How beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
That’s beautiful! I love it!
OMG!!!! That is beautiful!!!! Are you planning a full sleeve?! Go girl, grow girl!!
ohh… it looks beautiful, but i have to say i think it looks even better without the colour…
Wow! Wow! Wow! The painted tattoo, the link to the journal pages, I’m blown away. Will you ever wash your arm again? (I’d have trouble!)
I just love it! So creative and fun. It’s amazing that only took 10 minutes.
Great pics!

Um, you know what I love? When I’m just reading Better Homes and Gardens and you’re in it.
That is beautiful. Would love it as piece of framed art. The colors are wonderful… do you worry the colors could change over time?
Don’t think I could ever commit to a permanent tattoo. I like change too much. Also in my family we have always struggled with weight. What looks like a tomato today could look like an eggplant or a patty pan squash in few years! I’d better stick with jewelry and wall art. ïÂÅ
That is stunning!
This is so gorgeous. I am an ink-virgin but I’m trying to decide what to get.
WOW!! This makes me crave a tattoo. And a tomato. And a party where there are painted tattoos of tomatoes. Impressive journal pages by the artist, too. Thanks for sharing!
I have a tattoo in the same place! Mine is a rendition of Hokusai’s Peonies with Canary. I also debated getting it colored, but ended up having it done and love it. It definitely was more painful and expensive than just the line art, but it’s so much more beautiful now. I think you should definitely get it colored in Gayla! :)
beet5: I actually prefer tattoos on the lower half but didn’t come up with anything. I do have “designs” on my right arm now.
Liane: Well these colours washed off the next day so it’s just black again. Colours do fade over time though.
Zoe: You crack me up. I finally saw it today.
Jessica: that would be gorgeous on an arm.
Just gorgeous!
Oh how beautiful. I do love the uncolored line drawing, though. If you leave it w/o color you could have it ‘done up’ every so often painlessly by artists, which doesn’t sound so bad to me!
