Self Portrait on My Thirty-Fifth Birthday (Rooftop Farmer)

The tall stems behind me are Jerusalem Artichoke. I’m growing it in a big garbage bin as an experiment. Shiso and ‘Black Brandywine’ tomato is off to the side. Man, I can’t wait for those suckers to ripen. The Brandywine flavor merged with the depth and richness of a black tomato… that can’t not be good.

  1. Happy Birthday!

    Beautiful light in that photo.

I turned 35 this year as well – I hope you’re enjoying your 30s as much as I am. :)

  2. Happy Birthday, Gayla! Your book is one of my favorite books in the whole wide world, and definitely my favorite gardening book! :)

Thank you for helping make the world a beautiful, better place.

  3. Happy birthday to you! Just wanted to take this occasion to thank you for the book, for this site, and for the good you add to the world. It’s a lot!
