Grow Write Guild #12: Fall is Here

growwriteguild_banner600

And just like that we’ve gone from summer to fall. I could see the changes coming: the bean plants turning yellow and then brown; then, of course, that first colourful fallen leaf on the sidewalk. Despite these subtle signs, this year fall came suddenly, almost painfully. For that reason I thought it would be good therapy to do a prompt that could be used as a reminder of the wonderful things that come with the change in the season. As always, you are also encouraged to accentuate the negative if that’s the way you’d prefer to go.

Grow Write Guild Prompt #12: Describe fall in your garden in 5 to 10 words.

Further Notes and Questions:

  • You can approach these words as a collection of descriptions, or make them work together as a short poem or even just one sentence.
  • This prompt keeps it simple with just a few words, but you can also choose to take a few of those words and expand into a larger piece.

p.s. Please note that Grow Write Guild is now its own category. This should make it a little easier to find in the future. And in keeping with the new site design, there is a new, wider banner available in the right sidebar.

Now that we’re a few months into this project I’d like to get some feedback from you on the prompts. Do you like the mix of short, simple prompts and long “thinkers?” Have you found the Further Notes and Questions portion useful/insightful/unnecessary?

  1. Hello,
I’m I too late to plant winter vegetables?
Or what to plant for the winter?
    I buy organic seeds.

I live in the mountains near (south) of Yosemite, California.

    Thank you..

  2. New house, new yard
    Chill in the air
    Panic envelops

    Love these challenges!

If I were to expand on the above, my favorite perennial nursery is closing in a few weeks – hence the panic.

  3. Fall/Rainy Season…………planting okra, cucumbers, peppers and sweet potatoes here in the Caribbean. Then going to the beach.

  4. Didn’t take off as planned, but flourished in unexpected ways.

I like the mix of prompts. If you’re super busy it might be fun to have an open prompt where everyone can write about something different, keeping the momentum going on a week when you just need a break. It could even be based around one word, type of plant, a review or infoshare of something we’ve read or found online, etc. I love the community aspect of this, not just writing on my own. I’m looking forward to how this will shift and keep us thinking in the coming months. Thanks and keep up the good work!

  5. I love fall it use to be my favorite time of year but I am so in love with spring the last few years. Fall is still very special to me I love all the sights sounds and smells of the changing of the season. Looking forward to a color filled Autumn! Happy Autumn!! :-)

  6. Rain flattens everything. Grey sky softens shades of green.

As for the prompts, I LOVE THEM!

I’ve been writing a garden blog for years and I really look forward to your ideas. There is a never-ending story always growing around here but it’s so nice to lean on your prompts whenever I’m feeling uninspired.

  7. I’ve enjoyed the prompts over the season and they have inspired me in some areas that I wouldn’t otherwise have been inspired. Thank you!
