The Oxford dictionary defines a mentor as, “an experienced and trusted adviser” and a muse as “…the source of inspiration for a creative artist.”
Many gardeners have someone in their life, be it a family member, close friend, colleague, or a public figure to whom they have looked for gardening guidance, knowledge, inspiration, and/or influence. They make you think differently about your garden. They inspire you to try harder and do better. They teach by example. Their work has influenced some of the choices you’ve made in your garden over the years.
Grow Write Guild Prompt #4: Write about your garden mentor or muse.
A mentor or muse could be your neighbour, a parent or close relative, or a good friend. They can be someone who encouraged you directly, but they can also be someone that you do not know personally at all! She or he can be a television presenter, a book author, a newspaper columnist, an artist, a musician, or your dentist for that matter. They don’t even have to be a gardener. They could be a fictional character in a book or a real person that has been dead for a hundred years. Inspiration can come from a variety of sources.
-
Further Notes & Questions:
- Try writing this as a letter to your mentor or muse.
- You could also try writing the story of how you met your mentor/muse or how you came upon their work.
- How has their work/garden/art/etc influenced why or how you garden?
- Note that a mentor does not have to be someone who influenced you early on. They can be someone whose work sparked a shift in the way you garden or inspired you to try new plants and new ideas.
- Feel free to write about multiple sources of inspiration and influence if there is more than one. You can also try turning this into a classic dinner party scenario along the lines of “If you could invite 5 people to dinner, who would you invite?”
- Perhaps your muse is not a person at all. It could be your pet rabbit,a painting, or a piece of music.
How many of us will want to write about you Gayla? You definitely fit the definition for me, especially for looking at things differently.
I completely agree!
That’s really kind of you to say.

Hi Gayla! I’m late to the party but I did my first one. :)
I love this!! Your post is beautiful!
Hi Gayla,
My Mom and her garden taught me about gardening. Her preferences for plants like bright colored oriental poppies continues to influence my plant choices. This is an older post, but I don’t think I could write one better: http://threedogsinagarden.blogspot.ca/2012/01/art-of-gardening.html
Well, here goes…

Lovely! And now I have to find a copy of David’s book!
I gave his book to a friend for Xmas!
Thanks for this prompt, Gayla. It brought back some lovely memories as I cast about looking for the answer, and I still ended up writing something completely different from what was in mind when I finally sat down to write. My answer here.
I find that happens with me, too. Great story!
I love Mrs. Mason! Thanks for sharing!
Here’e my response to prompt #$. As always, I look forward to reading everyone’s posts.

My kids and many others (to numberous to name, really) are my inspiration. My feeble attempt to put it into words is here: http://www.modernmia.com/grow-write-guild/garden-muses-and-mentors.html
Hi Gayla,
This prompt was a bit tricky since I have so many lovely muses and sources of inspiration…all online! This community has really helped me get my hands in the dirt and learn how to grow things!!

My post is here http://leafstemthorn.blogspot.com/2013/05/grow-write-guild-4-inspiration-and.html , but I think it’s going to turn into a series. There are lots of people that I admire.
I like that you’re planning to expand on it.
Here is my post. :) http://gardengirl31.blogspot.com/2013/05/gardening-inspiration.html
My muse is a memory, and the people who created it. Gayla, you’re really helping me dig into myself this spring! http://paulasherbals.weebly.com/1/post/2013/05/writing-challenge-4-my-mentor-my-muse.html
I’m so glad to hear that!
Well this one took a while to do. Couldn’t think of a way in for a while until the penny dropped and I was away!

I love Nigel Slater’s work, too. He is also a gardener.
I loved this prompt…I racked my brain for a long time only to realize I’d overlooked the obvious. Thanks! My post: http://www.radicalrootsapothecary.com/?p=484
I had a hard time with this prompt but it helped to look at old photos.

I wrote this for a class (warning – it is in Middle English), but with this writing prompt in mind.
Finally finished. I enjoyed this one very much.
