Sigh. This view of my roof garden from the door feels a million miles away today.
Remember summer? Yeah, me neither. If not for photographic evidence I would have to assume these so-called memories are in fact only beautiful delusions. I know many of you in the Southern Hemisphere are in the midst of it so you will have to excuse my mid-winter pity party. Over the last few days the temperature has plummeted to an unbearable, and therefore unacceptable bone-chilling cold. Unbearable I tell you!! I held out for two full days hunkering down indoors without stepping foot outside until today when I had no choice but to suck it up, put on as many layers as possible and face it. Even worse, our Taste of Summer life-sustaining preserves are rapidly depleting: the red pepper katsup is no more (good-bye delicious sauce!) and I just opened the final jar of Blackened Salsa Ranchera.
Not to be dramatic, but people are dying over here!
See you in 5 months July, wherein you can expect to find me complaining about the heat.
haha, yeah i complain about the heat more than the cold. :) still, i find a good cold winter strangely comforting in these days of climate change.

I’m starting to feel the same way…I’ve been ogling summer garden photos, but trying to focus on all the seed swapping that’s coming up. That helps.
Quant: I can certainly agree with that. It makes the complaining feel extra good.
Gayla, I’m so there. I’ve just been obsessing over seed-starting and what to grow and just pouring over old summer gardening photos. Sad, sad, winter! But I’m looking forward to little seedlings in a couple of months!
The early January warm weather that we had in Toronto has kick-started my Spring Fever a little too early. …and now, this freezing arctic weather hasn’t stopped these two-months-premature gardening urges! I spent the weekend pulling my large tomato pots into my greenhouse to thaw, dumping them into a big mixing flat and then pouring in new peat… AND MIXING AND KNEADING IT AROUND! Cool soil up to my elbows. Mmmmmmmm. …and it gets worse! I can’t concentrate at work, I’m buying discarded gardening books at the library and reading them from cover to cover! …hey, actually… if this false-start makes for a great garden this summer, then I’m going to do it again next January! :-)
Good lord, that’s how I feel right now! We had a few mild days during which I was working in the yard with short sleeves, and now we’re dead in the middle of cold, gray, damn winter.
Probably nothing to Canada, of course. At least it’s a few above freezing during the day, here.
Still, I am longing for Spring!
-30 here (-40 with windchill). i don’t know how much gardening i’ll be doing this spring though as i’m expecting the stork again at the beginning of april. i guess i’ll be living vicariously through this site.

i just want to see green things again! and it’s not even february yet! why oh why did anyone ever settle in manitoba?!

I will think fondly of all seed.,plant, flower,lovers today(2-5)as I am in Austin and we are expected to hit 80 today. Today I will turn my compost,water my plants and talk to my cactus and succulents that are still in the greenhouse.I still cannot fully start the glorious task of getting all my plants and seeds ready yet as we do have a freeze sneak up sometimes.Peace to everyone and we shall soon go forth and make the world beautiful again.
