Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis)

I know these are bad. They’re the scourge of the California Coast and whatnot. But they sure are pretty, especially when they’re blooming. Which is what they were doing when I was there in April.

  1. Isn’t this the plant (the pinkish kind) that blooms all along the coast in Monterey/Pacific Grove? I always thought they were very pretty.

  2. We used to have Ice Plant olympics at my college in Monterey where you would get prizes based on how tall your pile was/how much iceplant you removed. ;o) All in the name of bringing back native plants, of course!

  3. Ah, another invasive that I have wrongly loved…Can I at least dream that the some of the native plants might be pink?

  4. You’re in luck, Kim – there are a ton of California natives that have pink flowers. :o) Sea thrift (Armeria maritima) is one of my favorites…it’s just so cute!
