Grow Write Guild #30 Our Gardens, Ourselves

Our gardens reflect who we are, what we need, and what we like. I am a tinkerer. I like to experiment, mess about, and explore. I am curious. I like insects. I like to grow plants that are useful. I like diversity. My garden is filled to overflowing with a wide range of useful and edible plants. I would describe its style as “thoughtful wildness” or “cultivated haphazardness,” terms that could also be used to describe the way my head works. I like colour and so my garden’s colour palette tends to fall into the “a bit of everything” category. I like old, rusty metal and my garden has lots of that, too. I spend a great deal of time in the garden and that shows in how often pots and plants move, and other changes are made.

Our gardens hold pieces of our past. They contain remnants of what we needed them to be last season, last year, or further back still. However, they are living environments that are constantly in a state of flux and for that reason they are also a glimpse into our present, this moment as it passes by to the next.

  1. I’m having fun with this one. To start, I turned the question around on my readers. In the meantime, I’m doing some reflecting for myself on how my garden in a reflection of my personality. I’m thinking the preponderance of berries says something, though I’m not sure what other than a love of baking. ;) http://blackberryburrow.com/?p=959
