Do You Think People Will Take Me Seriously as a “Garden Authority”

…if I were to start wearing this to presentations and appearances? It would solve the perennial problem of what to wear. I wonder if this is a media friendly red?

I think this is the look that is gonna carry my career through to the next level. When I spoke at Disney World last year, I was announced by an authoritative voice and then emerged from behind a black curtain to take the stage. The whole introduction was strangely awkward and felt like it could benefit from music. I never knew if I should run out waving or perform some kind of ILLUSION ala GOB on Arrested Development. If I am asked to speak there again, I imagine emerging from behind the curtain wearing this costume with this song playing. I think it works.

In all seriousness, I bought this costume to wear to the Blissdom conference costume party next week, but have found that I kind of want to wear it all of the time. It’s really comfortable! I’m like that kid that goes as Spiderman for Halloween, but ends of wearing to the grocery store and school months after the fact. Nothing to see here people. Just a pushing forty female dressed like a tomato.

  1. I take you even more seriously as a garden authority now that I know you are in possession of such a stunning get-up. Also, for Hallowe’en in grade 5 I convinced my mom to sew me a tomato costume. It was most excellent.

  2. I love it! It does remind me a bit of the Fruit of the Loom apple though… has corporate underwear bought you? :)

  3. How does Molly think? I was just thinking it would be a great outfit to go out for dinner in because you wouldn’t have to adjust a belt partway through the meal. Are you wearing green tights and shoes? Do you need to pull out the green glasses?

  4. LOL. I sewed myself a tomato suit in college and had my mastiff pull me around Eugene on my skateboard. She was a cool dog–knew left from right.

Anyway, your costume is bringing back a flood of good times. I love it.

  5. I won the giveaway with A Way to Garden and GrowOrganic, but I have not received your ebook. :( I was really looking forward to it! I’ve tried contacting you through your website form, but no answer, so maybe this will work. Thanks.

  6. Is the tomato a serious enough veggie/fruit? Maybe if you dressed up as a jerusalem artichoke. Or an actual (dangerous) artichoke – those things are like the mafia bosses of the veggie world.

  7. absolutely cool, but you should consider to plump it up (fluffy stuffing of some kind ) to avoid being mistaken for a sun dried tomato :-)

    • I’m thinking of putting balloons inside to keep it from deflating. The hard part is keeping them in as the bottom is completely open!

  8. Another reason i love your blog. You are so real. Honest and funny! Thanks for posting this and all of your other wonderful tips.
