This soft and creamy version of the typically orange California native poppies are just starting to bloom in my Dry Garden Bed. Despite my love of orange I went with the cream flowers because there are too many other colours in that bed and it would have been chaos. I also love the unusual.
The cactus in the background is one of several cold hardy opuntias that I am growing in the bed. This one has a taller form than usual, and long spines that hurt something fierce when they stick into your knee, I tell you what.
It doesn’t look like what you’d expect from a garden in Toronto does it?

I purchased these seeds from Renee’s Garden and sowed them in late winter/early spring. A friend of mine grew this variety last year and allowed it to self-seed. His flowers bloomed at least a month earlier than mine.
I loooooove california poppies but I’ve never seen this color before. Very nice and more restful than the bright orange. I noticed that a couple of my new neighbours (I recently moved) have hardy opuntia and other interesting things in their front yards. Like you say, not what we would expect in Ontario!

That is actually a bud not a seed pod. I love the cream poppies too. I had ‘Moonglow’ and ‘Buttermilk’ in my garden this year. ‘Moonglow’ was wonderful. Huge plant covered with hundreds of little cream flowers at a time. So wonderful.

Just beautiful…..”pastel” I had no idea they came in that color!!!!
