Grow Write Guild #8: The Essence of Summer

The summer solstice (June 21) has just passed and I thought it fitting to mark the turning of the seasons. Summer is my favourite season of the year, a joyful time of long days spent outdoors soaking up vitamin D and enjoying the bounty of crops as they come into fruition. However, having just visited the desert, I now understand firsthand how for some of you, summer is a difficult if not brutal season that is spent indoors. For that reason I’ve tried to keep this one open-ended so that you can approach it however you choose.

Grow Write Guild Prompt #8: Write about the plant that best encapsulates the essence of summer.

    Further Notes & Questions:

  • Write about the plant that comes to your mind first.
  • In thinking and writing about your plant, consider the five senses: look, touch, taste, smell, sound… Perhaps your plant is lush and vibrant at this time of the year. Or inversely, it may be brown and on its last limbs waiting for the rain and cooler temperatures to release it from hot-weather dormancy. It could be your favourite herb, fruit, or vegetable; the plant you dream about tasting through the off season.
  • Going in another direction: it might be the plant you most despise, a pernicious weed that takes over your garden in the hot summer months.
  • For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere: you can still write about a summertime plant, thinking ahead to the next season or behind to the summer that recently passed. There is also no reason why you can’t simply swap this season for the one you are currently experiencing.

  1. Mexican hat is the summer bloom that comes to mind. A prairie native, no degree of midwestern heat, lack of rain or tornadic deluge harms it. If I can find some extra time, I’ll try to blog this wonderful plant. If I don’t get around to it, google it, try it, you might like it!
